From City to Saddle: The Journey Begins
Following your Cape Town hotel pick-up, a scenic 45-minute transfer takes you from the bustle of the city to the tranquil countryside—the starting point of your 2-day self-guided mountain biking adventure. You’ll kick off your ride on a 300-year-old historic farm, where sweeping views of both False Bay and Table Bay set the tone for an unforgettable ride.
Morning Warm-Up: Bottelary Hills Conservancy Trails
Your morning ride winds through the Bottelary Hills Conservancy, a protected landscape of rolling hills, vineyards, and farmland. The mix of jeep tracks and flowy singletrack—never overly technical but still packed with challenges—makes this the perfect warm-up ride to get your legs moving and heart pumping.
Transitioning through open spaces and winding trails, the natural beauty of this region gives riders a taste of the day’s escalating adventure.
Midday Pause: Stellenbosch – Wine, Culture & Charm
By midday, you’ll arrive in the historic town of Stellenbosch, often hailed as the spiritual home of mountain biking in South Africa. Here, you’ll find award-winning wine estates, gourmet cuisine, and vibrant street culture. Take a well-earned break, fuel up, and soak in the heritage-rich atmosphere before tackling the afternoon’s exhilarating ride.
Afternoon Challenge: Conquer the Banhoek Slopes
Now comes the main event. The Banhoek Mountains, rising to a staggering 1,492m, form the dramatic centerpiece of the Hottentots-Holland Nature Reserve. The Banhoek Nature Conservancy, located on the valley floor and home to several historic wine farms, is your gateway to thrill-seeking singletrack.
Get ready for purpose-built MTB trails.
It’s an adrenaline-packed playground that demands technical skill, strength, and stamina. This is mountain biking at its finest—raw, wild, and intensely rewarding.
Ride Where Few Have Ridden Before
Until recently, many of these trails were off-limits to the public, reserved for elite events like the ABSA Cape Epic and Origins of Trails. Unless you’ve had a local hook-up or raced here, chances are this is your first opportunity to ride these exclusive routes.
Whether you’re ducking under lush tree ferns or grinding your way up epic climbs, you’ll feel the true pulse of South African MTB culture. This isn’t just a ride—it’s a bucket-list biking experience.

Nestled between the majestic Simonsberg and Drakenstein mountain ranges, Boschendal sits just outside the Franschhoek Valley, right in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom—a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, time seems to stand still. Whether you choose to unwind beneath the oak trees, savor local farm-to-table cuisine, or explore the estate’s wide range of outdoor activities, Boschendal offers something for every traveler.
A Relaxed Start with Scenic Riding
After a restful night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast, it’s time to ease into the day’s ride. Today’s route is shorter—just 17 km with 450 meters of climbing—giving your legs a break without skimping on beauty or enjoyment. You’ll cruise along a mix of well-maintained jeep tracks and scenic farm roads, making your way toward the elegant Plaisir de Merle Wine Estate, nestled in the foothills of the Simonsberg.
It’s the perfect wind-down ride following the intensity of the previous day.

Patrick was kind enough to go on on his self to get his car, after which he fetched me and brought me to my car.
In a nutshell: Patrick is a very nice and fit guy you enjoy being around with that knows the Cape very well. I can recommend booking him–should I be travelling to CT again, I will do so myself!
