From Coast to Vines: Transfer to the Bottelary Hills
From Hout Bay, we hop into the support vehicle for a 45-minute scenic transfer into the heart of the Cape Winelands. Our destination: the Bottelary Hills Conservancy, located just 30 km from Stellenbosch. Sunrise Spin Through Stellenbosch’s Historic Charm
Kickstart your day with a hearty breakfast and saddle up for an early morning warm-up ride through the iconic town of Stellenbosch. With its oak-lined avenues, Dutch-era architecture, and rich heritage dating back to 1679, it’s a scene straight out of a history book — and it sets the tone for the adventure ahead.
First Climb: Into the Clouds on Jonkershoekberg
Time to crank the pedals and get that heart pumping — the first major ascent of the day delivers lung-busting switchbacks as you climb the northern slopes of Jonkershoekberg. At the summit, you’re rewarded with jaw-dropping views stretching all the way to Cape Town.
From here, we traverse the Skyline Trail, skimming 500 meters above sea level. Below lies the lush Banhoek Valley, but up here, the air is thin and the stoke is high.
Dirt Dreams & Downhill Thrills
Now for the sweet payoff — drop into a flowy descent packed with curvy, whipped dirt switchbacks. It’s the kind of trail that makes you whoop out loud. Pro tip: Get your riding buddy to check your pulse — it might just be off the charts.
At the valley floor, power your way over the Warsrivier crossing. Keep your eyes on the trail — the stunning vistas toward the Banhoek peaks will try to steal your focus.
Singletrack Heaven Through Fynbos & Wildlife
Next up: the Nick Nack singletrack — a trail that winds you into Fynbos paradise, complete with technical rock features, tight zigzags, and contour traverses that test your bike handling.
Duck through a game fence gate and drop into a descent lined with S-bends and sweeping curves. Time to open it up — this is pure speed with a wild twist. You might just catch a glimpse of Eland or Oryx alongside the trail!
Midday Refuel at Boschendal Deli
Coast into Boschendal Wine Estate, where a few flat kilometers of single and jeep track bring you to the well-deserved oasis of the Boschendal Deli. Expect a perfect mix of farm-fresh flavors, contemporary dishes, and award-winning wines. Insider tip: the burgers are an absolute must-try.

Flowing Trails and Fynbos Magic
At around 500m above sea level, we hit a flowy singletrack that winds along the contour. Keep your eyes open for stream crossings, where you can take a sip of pure mountain water, and enjoy riding through vibrant fynbos, ancient wild olive trees, and blooming Proteas.
Then comes the adrenaline spike: a thrilling descent into the valley, carving down a technical singletrack that leads us straight to our support vehicle.
Quick Transfer, Fresh Trails
After a short 20-minute transfer, we saddle up again to tackle the next segment of our mountain biking journey—this time heading toward the rugged beauty of the Franschhoek Valley.
River Crossings and Dam-Side Riding
We trace the meandering path of the Berg River, even crossing it along the way. Prepare for an exhilarating ride as we race along the banks of the Berg River Dam—a wild, raw terrain that offers a different kind of MTB thrill.
This section may not be as sculpted as manicured bike parks, but its untamed character and dramatic mountain backdrop elevate the sense of adventure to a whole new level.
Roll Into Franschhoek
By mid-afternoon, we roll into the charming town of Franschhoek, with its French heritage, world-class cuisine, and well-earned rest. After a full day of climbing, descending, and exploring, this legendary wine valley welcomes us with open arms.

The Ultimate Test – Longest Ride of the Adventure Awaits
Brace yourself—today marks the queen stage of the tour! It’s the longest and most demanding ride of all four days, so dig deep and fuel up with a hearty breakfast. After a quick vehicle transfer, we kick off with a thrilling 8km downhill tarmac warm-up from the top of Franschhoek Pass. Use this time to spin out the legs and soak in the majestic views before we dive into the wilderness.
Into the Wild – Theewaterskloof Nature Reserve Exploration
We drop into “Purgatory”, the entry point into the Theewaterskloof Nature Reserve, where the ride transitions to gravel and undulating terrain. The trail loops gently around the dam, offering smooth riding and prime wildlife spotting—look out for Eland, Cape Mountain Zebra.
Ride smart—this is just the appetizer. Save your legs and stay conservative, because the real climbing and trail shredding is still to come.
Transfer and Terrain Shift – Welcome to Groenlandberg
After wrapping up the dam loop, we hop in the support van for a 30-minute transfer toward the Groenlandberg Nature Reserve. Now it’s time to gear up for the main course—a rugged mountain biking route through diverse fynbos, rocky ridgelines, and ever-changing gradients.
The trail follows the historical path of an old wagon road, linking two remote valleys. You’ll be greeted by panoramic views that stretch all the way across the valley floor.
Fast & Furious – Descent into Oak Valley Grabouw.
After conquering the climb, it’s time to drop into gravity mode. The descent from the top of the pass is a fast, technical thrill ride that demand both focus and finesse.
We roll into Oak Valley Grabouw for a well-deserved lunch break—rest, refuel, and reload.
Post-Lunch Burn – Red Route Oak Valley
Once you’re refueled, it’s time to burn off those calories. We continue our adventure with more punchy climbs and epic flow sections, riding up into the Oak valley ridgelines. Singletrack heaven, with a mix of berms, rollers, and forested switchbacks that will have you grinning from ear to ear.
What comes up must come down, and tricky descents are on the menu as the course weaves down the valleys to our final overnight destination.

After a hearty early breakfast, we clip in and roll out for the last epic stage of our mountain biking adventure. Today’s ride launches us into the rugged beauty of the Elgin Valley, where a steady ascent awaits into the iconic A to Z trail network—a must-ride for any serious singletrack enthusiast.
Climb, Conquer, and Soak in the Views
As we climb into the upper reaches of the trails, the terrain becomes more challenging—but the reward is unmatched. At the summit, riders are treated to panoramic views across the Elgin plateau, before descending toward the historic Gantouw Pass—a route steeped in culture and legend.
Gantouw Pass: Pedaling Through History
The Gantouw Pass, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has long served as a crucial portal into Elgin. Once traversed by Khoi San herders and later by pioneering ox wagons, it now challenges mountain bikers with a mandatory portage section, forcing even the toughest riders to hike-a-bike through a narrow slice of South African history.
