Meet and greet our tour guide and transfer to Table Mountain.
Cradled by Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head, Cape Town offers a rich historical heritage, scenic splendor, and a kaleidoscope of color, activity, and excitement.
Playground par excellence Table Mountain staged the Cape Epic prologue many times over. Perfect location for the start of our multi-day mountain bike tour. The first part of our journey takes us on a short but exciting 30 km of mixed-track conditions all the way to Tokai Forest. Starting at the Table Mountain lower cable car station. The tared road soon become dirt, descending towards Cape Town University. The first 15 kilometers are a short but exciting ride along the mountain. A couple of steep, loose descents and technical sections will test your bravery and skill in equal measure. Soon, riding above Rhodes Memorial, Groote Schuur Estate, and Cecilia Forest before reaching the suburban trail of Constantia Greenbelt. The trails along the greenbelt offer a little bit of everything, from the odd dip into a fully covered forest to a smooth, manicured trail. Reaching late in the morning, Tokai favorite cyclists’ light lunch and coffee at “Bootlegger”.
The second part of our day starts with a gradual ascent up the flanks of the Constantiaberg. The moderate incline of the trail soon becomes a steep climb through sections of pine plantations before getting into the contour path. The wide-open spaces allow you to take in views of the Cape Flats, False Bay and Cape Point before reaching the Silvermine Nature Reserve. The Silvermine Nature Reserve, which forms part of Table Mountain National Park, is home to more than 900 species of mountain Fynbos, some of which are found nowhere else in the world. From here, it’s another rough and rocky downhill jeep track section crossing over to the west side of the peninsula. You will be brave enough to leave the brakes alone! Soon, you will be reaching Noordhoek and your overnight accommodation. A good first day on the saddle, with a 50 km mark.
Overnight in Noordhoek
Lunch and dinner are excluded.
* Tokai Mountain biking trail.
* Silvermine Mountain biking trail.

Day 1
- Fitness Level Difficult
- Technical Level Moderate
- Distance: 65km
- Terrain: Cross country, jeep track and single.

Early breakfast. Today we cycle from your hotel to Hout Bay via the 10-kilometer scenic coastal tarred road of Chapman’s Peak. Followed by a 45-minute vehicle transfer taking us from Hout Bay to the Cape Winelands “Bottelary Hills Conservancy.” Situated 30km away from Stellenbosch, the Bottelary Hills Concervancy has over 130km of trail network, including 42 kilometers of single tracks. The area is a paradise for cross-country mountain biking enthusiasts. Our ride to Stellenbosch covers 30km with approximately 1000m of positive climb and can be challenging. Game such as caracal, grysbok, grey duiker, porcupine, cape foxes, and otters still roam naturally. The hallmark of the trails is the scenic beauty and incredible views of the Cape Winelands, Table Mountain, False Bay, and other surrounding areas. All on natural terrain, this carefully planned route offers a good mix of technical and flowy single tracks. Finally, reaching Stellenbosch, a biker’s and wine lover’s paradise. Consequently, we well deserve a midday lunch break before our Jonkershoek Valley afternoon leg. Everyone who has ridden Jonkershoek will tell you that it’s one of the best places they’ve ever ridden. However, anyone who hasn’t ridden Jonkershoek has heard of it. The Absa Cape Epic events use Jonkershoek as part of their race routes every year. In a region of mountain biking riches, Jonkershoek shines brightest as it is a World Heritage Site. The vegetation is primarily mountain fynbos. The mountain bike trails vary from exposed and sunny to forested and shady. Our single-track switchback ascent takes us up the northern side of the valley towards Twin Peaks. Finally, reaching contour 5, fire road, heading south along the sky traverse down with never-ending story across the valley floor before our final climb of the day. It’s as challenging going up as going down, each of which consumes a lot of energy and isn’t home until it’s done.
Overnight in Stellenbosch
Lunch and dinner are excluded.
* Constantia green belt mountain biking trail
* Chapman’s Peak ride
* Cape of Good Hope nature reserve
* Penguin colony

Early breakfast and riding through the picturesque town of Stellenbosch, with its charming character, historic architecture and oak-lined avenues, is a must to visit on anyone’s itinerary. The first farms were allocated before the end of 1679 and the village was formally established in 1685. Salut! A touch of France is coming our way in today’s ride as we will be heading toward Franschhoek. Riding.
Crank up into cloud country for your first killer climb of the day through shady plantations up the north slopes of Jonkershoekberg all the way up to the sky traverse 500m above sea level. The reward is just amazing, and what better way to start our first descent down the Banhoek valley along a curvaceous excess of whipped dirt zigzag. You may want to get one of your fellow riders to check your pulse. In the valley, rocky trails await before crossing over the Dwarsrivier. Stunning valley views towards the Banhoek peaks keep your mind off the ascent as you approach the Nick Nack single-track and into fynbos heaven. Expect a few rock obstacles as you power up the zigzags onto a contour traverse. Then through the game fence gate, before dropping down the valley with ess-bends and sweeping curves, you had better pin your ears back. Follow the game trail, you are likely to ride alongside Eland and Oryx. Lastly, a few fast and flat kilometers of single and jeep track finally arriving at Boschendal for our midday lunch stop. Following a well-deserved rest, our afternoon ride takes us to Franschhoek following the course of the Berg River and crossing it! Expect a rollicking ride on the banks of the Berg River Dam. There is no denying that it is a spectacular place to ride. Although maybe not as manicured as any of the other MTB trails, it gives a serious feeling of adventure when you are dwarfed by massive mountains all around you. Arriving late in the afternoon in Franschhoek.
Overnight in Franschhoek
Lunch and dinner are excluded.
* Banghoek nature conservancy mountain biking trail
* Stellenbosch valley
* River crossing

Be buoyed by the knowledge that today’s ride is the longest of all four days and not the easiest! A healthy breakfast followed by a short transfer to the top of the Franschhoek Pass, for a scenic tarmac warm-up ride of 8km down to the purgatory, where we enter the Theewaterskloof nature reserve.
The track around the dam is gentle and undulating, a variety of antelopes may be spotted, as well as Eland and Cape Mountain Zebra. Conservative riding is best; don’t beat yourself up here as the main course of the day is still to come! We will have a short transfer of 30mn with the minibus to the start of our next MTB trail alongside the Groenlandberg nature reserve. The rich and diverse fauna and flora of the region make this an interesting route, with the many natural obstacles adding to the challenge.
The trail will follow the track of an old wagon road linking the two valleys. As you gain altitude and test your fitness, the magnificent view down below reveals the valley. From the top of the Pass, it is all down. Grab the handlebars! Some sections require technical ability and prudence. Lunch stop at Oak Valley wine estate.
To make sure all your lunch calories are burnt, we have left you with the main course of the day, with a couple more climbs going across the valley Hills above Eikenhof Dam and up the famous A-to-Z trails. Finally reaching the historic Gantouw Pass. The Gantouw Pass was, for centuries, the only access route into Elgin from the west. Initially, Khoi San herders used the portal to move cattle between grazing grounds and to trade with early European seafarers. Then, in more recent times, ox wagons were dragged up the pass as the settlers sought out new lands in the interior. A World heritage site, the Gantouw Pass, has a mandatory portage. Arriving late in the afternoon at our final destination after four exhilarating mountain biking days.
lunch excluded.

Patrick was kind enough to go on on his self to get his car, after which he fetched me and brought me to my car.
In a nutshell: Patrick is a very nice and fit guy you enjoy being around with that knows the Cape very well. I can recommend booking him–should I be travelling to CT again, I will do so myself!asseeger
