Playground par excellence Table Mountain staged the Cape Epic prologue many times over. Perfect location for the start of our multi-day mountain bike tour. The first part of our journey takes us on a short but exciting 30 km of mixed-track conditions all the way to Tokai Forest. Starting at the Table Mountain lower cable car station. The tared road soon become dirt, descending towards Cape Town University. The first 15 kilometers are a short but exciting ride along the mountain. A couple of steep, loose descents and technical sections will test your bravery and skill in equal measure. Soon riding above Rhodes Memorial, Groote Schuur Estate, and through Cecilia Forest before reaching the suburban trail of Constantia Greenbelt. The trails along the greenbelt offer a little bit of everything, from the odd dip into a fully covered forest to a smooth, manicured trail. Reaching Tokai late in the morning, my favorite light lunch and coffee place.
The second part of our day starts with a gradual ascent up the flanks of Constantiaberg. The moderate incline of the trail soon becomes a steep climb through sections of pine plantations before getting into the Silvermine Nature Reserve. Home to more than 900 species of mountain Fynbos. You now leave the forest and ride along a contour path. The wide-open spaces allow you to take in views of the Cape Flats, False Bay and Cape Point. From here, it’s another rough and rocky downhill jeep track crossing over the west side of the peninsula. You will be brave enough to leave the brakes alone! Soon reaching your Noordhoek accommodation. A good first day on the saddle, with a 50 km mark.
Overnight in Noordhoek
Lunch and dinner are excluded.
* Mountain biking along Table Mountain jeep track.
* Mountain biking Constantia Green Belt and Tokai forest.
* Mountain biking Silvermine Nature Reserve.

Early breakfast. Today we cycle from your hotel to Hout Bay via the 10 km scenic coastal tarred road of Chapman’s Peak. Then a 45-minute vehicle transfer takes us from Hout Bay to the Cape Winelands “Bottelary Hills conservancy” 30km away from Stellenbosch. Filled with stretching vineyards and farmlands with over 130km of trail network including 42km single tracks, the area is a paradise for cross-country mountain biking enthusiasts. Game such as caracal, grysbok, grey duiker, porcupine, cape foxes and otters still roam naturally. The hallmark of the trails is the scenic beauty and incredible views of the Winelands, Table Mountain, False Bay, and other surrounding areas. Our mid-morning ride to Stellenbosch covers 30km with approximately 1000m of positive climb. It appeals to moderate to fit riders and can be challenging. All in natural terrain, this carefully planned route offers a good mix from technical to flowy single track. Stellenbosch is a biker’s and wine lover’s paradise. Consequently, a well-deserve midday lunch break is on our agenda. The afternoon leg takes us to Jonkershoek valley. Everyone that has ridden Jonkershoek will tell you that it’s one of the best places they’ve ever ridden. However, anyone that hasn’t ridden Jonkershoek has heard of it. The Absa Cape Epic events use Jonkershoek as part of their race routes every year. In a region of mountain biking riches, Jonkershoek shines brightest as it is a World Heritage Site. The vegetation is primarily mountain Fynbos a unique world floral kingdom only found in South Africa. The mountain bike trails vary from exposed and sunny to forested and shady. As midday oppressive heat settles, our route takes us up the northern side of the valley on a single track ascent steadily over almost 5km and along the valley contour jeep track before descending on single track to the valley floor and across to the southern side of the valley. It’s as challenging to go up as going down – each of which consumes a lot of energy and isn’t home until it’s done.

Breakfast and early ride through the picturesque town of Stellenbosch, with its charming character, historical architecture and oak-lined avenues, it is on anyone’s itinerary. The first farms were allocated before the end of 1679 and the village was formally established in 1685.Â
Crank up into cloud country for your first killer climb of the day as you take in spectacular views towards Cape Town with plenty of switchbacks all the way to the north slopes of Jonkershoekberg. Followed by the sky traverse 500m above sea level, offering awesome views down the Banhoek valley. The reward is just amazing and what better way to start our first descent along curvaceous excess of whipped dirt zigzag. You may want to get one of your fellow riders to check your pulse. In the valley, rocky trails await before crossing over the Dwarsrivier. Stunning valley views towards the Banhoek peaks keep your mind off the ascent as you approach the Nick Nack single-track and into Fynbos heaven. Expect a few rock obstacles as you power up the zigzags onto a contour traverse. Then through the game fence gate, before dropping down the valley with ess-bends and sweeping curves, you better pin your ears back. Follow’s by the game trail, you are likely to ride alongside Eland and Oryx. Lastly, a few fast and flat kilometers of single and jeep track finally arriving at Boschendal Deli for a well- deserve midday break. An excellent balance between earthy, organic food and contemporary cuisine accompanied by world-class wines. Their burgers are a top choice. The after-lunch ride takes us onto the hidden gem of Boschendal wine estate mountain bike trails. Boschendal is one of the oldest wine estates in the country and now a mountain biker’s heaven. It has roughly 72 km of mountain bike trails. We ride a 15 km loop around the farm from fast forest trails to twisty open flowing trails, not technical but very enjoyable. With the majestic Simonsberg towering above and views across the Franschhoek valley, you would be forgiven for stopping every few kilometers.Â
Overnight in Boschendal
Lunch & Dinner excluded.
* Stellenbosch historical town
* Mountain biking Sky fall trails
* Mountain biking Banhoek conservancy trails

Be pleased by the knowledge that today’s ride is one of the shortest of all five days, but not the easiest! Healthy early breakfast before heading into action. We start from our accommodation by going up the lower slope of the Simonsberg. The opening climbs through the vineyards provide a great warm-up into the cool morning before reaching the sky traverse. The views along the way, as well as the drop-down towards the vineyards are worth every effort before reaching the traverse. The single-track contours at about 500m above sea level and reveals beautiful view over the Paarl and Franschoek Valleys. Some nice streams crossings with crystal clear mountain water to drink. Riding through exquisite Fynbos areas with wild olives and Proteas before plummeting down the valley on a single track. A short 20-minute vehicle liaison takes us to the start of our next MTB trail journey to Paarl Rock Mountain.
If there was a rainbow exclusively for mountain bikers, the “pot of gold” would be the mountain bike trail traversing Paarl Rock from south to the northern end of the mountain, and it is exactly on our agenda! Our MTB route has a variety of solid climbs, jeep tracks and plenty of flowing single downhill’s trails. With amazing views of the vineyards, dams and farms below in the valleys as well as the mountain ranges hugging Paarl to the east. The mountain is, layered with granite, which provides for interesting features. On the route you pass by large granite boulders, riding underneath these and in other places over them.Â
Starting with a conservative riding is best to keep your energy for the Grand Finale. As you hit the single-track heaven from the top of Paarl Mountain with still 20 km to go. The best part? it’s mostly downhill and certainly one of the best experiences you can have on a mountain bike! Before arriving late in the afternoon at the Rheboks Restaurant and Pizzeria for your post-ride beer and pizza.Â
Overnight in Paarl
Lunch & Dinner excluded.
* Mountain biking Boschendal trails
* Mountain biking Plaisir de Merle trails
* Mountain biking Paarl Rock mountain trails

Early morning breakfast and short vehicle transfer to Wellington. Many mountain biking trails claim to have the most amazing routes. Wellington is no different. Nestled between the beautiful Hawekwa and Groenberg mountain ranges, our last mtb ride offers a real cycling treat. Steep climbs and fast flowing single track use regularly for mountain biking events such as the ABSA Cape Epic 2024 stage 5. A thrilling way to top up on adrenaline before the flattish cruise home to our midday lunch stop in the Doolhof Valley. The afternoon sees us unwind after those fabulous 4 days of mountain biking through some of the country’s best mountain bike trails and some of the best red wine the area has to offer! Mid-afternoon transfer back to Cape Town.
Lunch excluded.

Patrick was kind enough to go on on his self to get his car, after which he fetched me and brought me to my car.
In a nutshell: Patrick is a very nice and fit guy you enjoy being around with that knows the Cape very well. I can recommend booking him–should I be travelling to CT again, I will do so myself!asseeger
