Mountain Biking Stellenbosch to Boschendal
Stellenbosch: A Hub of South African Mountain Biking
Historically, Stellenbosch has consistently been at the forefront of South Africa’s fat-track mountain biking culture. Over the years, a group of trail builders have craft MTB magic in the scenic shadow of the Banhoek mountains. Consequently, the area has developed into a premier destination for riders who are in search of thrills and breathtaking natural beauty. Those peaks! rising up in all their rugged glory for miles and miles. Up to quite recently, most of these trails have been off-limits to regular riders.
Climbing Botmaskop and the Sky Traverse
Our route departs from Stellenbosch and takes us onto the slopes of the imposing Botmaskop Mountain. As the trail gradually winds upward, you’ll have ample opportunity to take in the spectacular views toward Cape Town. Along the way, a series of switchbacks steadily lead you all the way to the saddle. This is followed by the exhilarating Sky Traverse, which then treats you to breathtaking views down into the Banhoek Valley. The coming reward is just amazing a curvaceous excess of whipped zigzag descent. You may want to get one of your fellow riders to check your pulse. As you make your way up the ascent, the stunning valley views toward the Banhoek peaks help take your mind off the climb.
Entering the Nick Nack Trail and Fynbos Wonderland
Eventually, you’ll reach the entrance to the Nick Nack single-track, where the trail leads you straight into a fynbos paradise.
One thing you can bank on is proper climb. That is to say you may have a quiet chat with your calves before you set off.
Flowing and Challenging Purpose-Built TrailsÂ
As you navigate the purpose-built singletracks, you’ll weave through the terrain, then cross wooden bridges, next glide beneath lush tree ferns, and finally flow through sweeping vineyards.
Each section unfolds with its own unique charm and excitement, keeping riders engaged throughout the journey. As the trail progresses, the sneaky tree roots and steep descents add an extra layer of challenge, ultimately separating the men from the boys.
Technical Descents and Wildlife Encounters
Expect a few rock obstacles as you power up the zigzags onto the contour traverse. Then through the game fence gate, before dropping down the valley. With ess-bends and sweeping curves, you better pin your ears back. Follows by the Game trail, you are likely to ride alongside Eland and Oryx. Finally, the route concludes with a few fast and flat kilometers of singletrack and rocky jeep trails.
Boschendal: A Gourmet Midday Break
After crossing the Dwarsrivier, we make our way to Boschendal Deli, where a well-deserved midday break awaits.
Above all an excellent balance between earthy, organic food and contemporary cuisine, accompanied by world-class wines. Their burgers are a top choice.
The Return Ride via Helshoogte Pass
For our return journey, we follow a shorter route that begins with the flat section of the game trail followed by the Helshoogte ascent before descending back into Stellenbosch.
A Scenic and Unforgettable MTB Adventure
To sum up an incredible day in the saddle, this loop is without a doubt one that consistently delivers from beginning to end with each section bringing its own excitement and beauty. Moreover, the sense of adventure it inspires lingers long after you’ve stepped off the bike, making the experience truly unforgettable.
With a good 1100m of ascent and 55km, this MTB excursion is, without a doubt, a good workout for the day.

Had ample time for shopping and lunch. A wonderful stop @ Boulders Beach to visit penguins and a love at first site to see Simons Town. Was sad to leave at the end of the day. Any tour would be great but I’d say full days are the greatest. Going back to Cape Town I’d book everyday with him. Thank you Patrick for being amazing keep on being you as you are simply the best.

I had the pleasure to (try) the “Mini” peninsula all day tour. Patrick met me at the lower table car station at Table Mountain to start the tour. I was… read more his only guest, so we had lot’s of time to chat. Being in CT for 30 years and doing mtb for more than 15, Patrick definitely knows the ins and outs and is a very good guide.
The views and impressions, but also the inside informations on the tour were very special and even though I had to realise I would not make it back to the cable car station (I was around 250 / 1500 altitude meters short…), I still loved every meter I rode.
Patrick was kind enough to go on on his self to get his car, after which he fetched me and brought me to my car.
In a nutshell: Patrick is a very nice and fit guy you enjoy being around with that knows the Cape very well. I can recommend booking him–should I be travelling to CT again, I will do so myself!
